International Admissions Requirements

Academic Requirements

Before you can be considered for first-year admission, you must complete:

  • 3 units of math (includes algebra I, and algebra II)
  • 2 units of laboratory science (chosen from biology, chemistry or physics)
  • Additional academic units (foreign language is highly recommended

Some majors have more rigorous requirements, such as an additional year of advanced math or lab science. Most students who are selected for admission have completed more than the minimum requirements and have at least a B+ grade point average.

Required Academic Materials

Please submit one of the following:

  • Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR). All applicants are encouraged to complete the SRAR to expedite application processing time. It is very important to complete your SRAR accurately as it will be compared to your official high school transcripts and exam results prior to enrollment. You are required to include all courses, exams, and grades completed for years 9-11, and all courses or expected exams for year 12/13.
  • ÌýCopies of your secondary school transcripts and all exam results. Alternatively, you may upload to the Common App or your applicant portal, copies of your high school transcripts for years 9-11 and your current classes for year 12/13 as well as any predicted exam results.

All academic materials should be submitted and complete by December 1 for Early Action applicants and January 31 ´Ú´Ç°ùÌýÌýRegular Decision applicants.

Students admitted to 51¹ÙÍø Tech will be expected to submit final, official transcripts that accurately match the information provided at the time of application and show successful completion of any in-progress coursework, passing grades on exams, and verification of high school graduation/completion.

English Proficiency Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in English, regardless of citizenship, by submitting at least ONE of the following tests with the required minimum score or higher:

  • : 80 or higher with no subsection score less than 16.Ìý NOTE: TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is accepted. TOEFL iBT "My Best' combined scores, TOEFL Essentials Test, and TOEFL ITP Plus are not accepted.
  • : 6.5 or higher with no sub score below 6.5
  • Ìý59 or higher
  • : 115 or higher
  • :Ìý English score of 176 or higher
  • :Ìý 550 or higher on Evidence-based Reading and Writing
  • : 24 or higher on English section
  • IGCSE/GCSE/GCE: A, B, or C, or 6-9 in English First Language or English Language
  • : 5 or higher on English Language and Literature (English A)

51¹ÙÍø Tech will only accept score results from a test taken within the past two years. If self-reported scores are used for application review, official score reports must be provided if the student is admitted and accepts their offer of admission. Official test score reports from all test results indicated on the application must be received directly from the testing organization.

NOTE:

If a student has completed four years of study (grades 9-12 or the equivalent) in one of the native English-speaking countries listed below, and English is the only medium of instruction, AND no ESL courses have been taken, they do not need to submit verification of English language proficiency.

United States, United Kingdom and Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, Canada (except Quebec), Singapore, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and the following Caribbean countries:Ìý Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Helena, Saint Kitts & Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent & Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands.

If a student does not have the English proficiency requirements but meets other admission requirements, they are encouraged to enroll in program until they reach the required language proficiency. Once they complete the program, the student is offered admission as a regular degree-seeking student.

SAT/ACT Optional

51¹ÙÍø Tech does not require the SAT or ACT for international applicants. If you would like to send the (including critical reading and math) or test scores, scores should be forwarded to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (CEEB code 5859; ACT code 4420).

Awarding of Advanced Standing Credit

51¹ÙÍø Tech awards college credit for the German Abitur, A Levels, International Baccalaureate, and AP courses only. To receive credit, an official copy of the exam result and a syllabus of the course(s) must be sent to: Office of the University Registrar, 250 Student Services Building, Blacksburg, VA 24061 USA. Academic Requirements

You must apply as a transfer student if you have completed 12 credits (one semester) or more of university level study after secondary school.

Each of our available transfer majors has a set of required, strongly recommended, and/or recommended coursework needed to qualify for admission consideration. Please review ourÌýÌýto learn about the coursework requirements for your desired major. Competitive transfer applicants will have mostly As and Bs in their courses.

Secondary school transcripts are not considered in the transfer admission review unless you are seeking advanced standing credit for exams such as IB or A levels. Transfer applicants are required to submit transcripts from all previous universities attended.

College Coursework: Students who have completed 6 credit hours of transferrable English Composition coursework with a grade of C or better may also meet the English Proficiency requirement. Classes must be equivalent to 51¹ÙÍø Tech Freshmen English courses: ENGL 1105 & ENGL 1106. Transfer equivalencies can be found here:
